How Much Does Junk Removal Cost in Northern Virginia?

Straight answer: between $99 and $1,000 for almost every residential job in Fairfax, Arlington, Alexandria and Loudoun. Here is exactly where your pile lands on that ladder — and the three things that quietly push the number up.

Every junk removal company in Northern Virginia gives you the same non-answer when you call: "it depends on volume, we'll quote on site." That is technically true and practically useless. You are trying to decide whether to book at all, and nobody will give you a number until a truck is already in your driveway.

So here is the number. This is the actual price ladder we publish on our own site, and it is close to the Northern Virginia market average — the regional average ticket for a residential job sits around $354 to $485, which is right in the middle of what you will see below.

The price ladder by load size

Junk removal is priced by how much space your stuff takes in the truck, not by weight and not by the hour. A truck bed is divided into fractions, and you pay for the fraction you fill.

What you haveTruck spacePrice
1–2 items (a couch, a mattress, a desk)Minimumfrom $99
3–6 items (couch + mattress + bed frame + boxes)Small loadabout $225
A room, a packed shed, a small garage¼ to ½ truckabout $450
A full garage or a basement½ truckabout $600
Large cleanout, multiple rooms¾ truckabout $850
Whole-house, move-out, downsizingFull truckfrom $1,000
Hot tub or jacuzzi (cut and haul)Specialtyfrom $400
Dump trailer, delivered, you load itSelf-load rentalfrom $300

How to estimate your own load in 30 seconds. Stand where the pile is and picture a standard pickup bed, loaded level with the rails. That is roughly a quarter truck. A full living-room set — sofa, loveseat, coffee table, TV stand, rug — is usually about a half truck.

The three things that move the price

1. Items with a disposal fee attached

Some things cost money to get rid of no matter who hauls them, because the landfill or recycler charges for them specifically. These are added on top of your load price, not hidden inside it:

Washers, dryers, stoves, grills, filing cabinets and bed frames have no surcharge. They are ordinary household metal and go in at normal load pricing.

2. Distance from our yard

Northern Virginia is bigger than it looks. A run to Sterling and back is not the same job as a run to Annandale, and any company that tells you distance is free is building it into the base price for everyone.

You can check your own ZIP code on our quote tool and it will tell you before you book which band you fall into.

3. Access — stairs, elevators, and how far the walk is

This is the one nobody mentions until the crew arrives. A third-floor walk-up in Arlington takes roughly twice as long as a garage in Burke for the identical pile. Reputable companies fold this into the quote if you tell them upfront. Companies that don't ask are the companies that "adjust" the price once your sofa is already halfway down the stairwell.

The on-site price jump is the #1 complaint in this industry. You get quoted $250 on the phone, the truck shows up, and suddenly it is $480 because "the load is bigger than described." Protect yourself the same way you would with any contractor: send photos before booking and get the number in writing. Any company that won't commit to a photo-based price is telling you something.

What is not included — heavy material

Most junk removal trucks in Northern Virginia, ours included, do not take concrete, dirt, sand, brick, roofing tile, or bulk metal like rebar and beams. This is not snobbery. Landfills bill construction material by the ton — tipping in this region runs roughly $40 to $98 per ton depending on the county — and a half-truck of concrete weighs more than a full truck of furniture. The economics simply do not work in a standard box truck.

If that is what you have, what you actually want is a roll-off dumpster from a company that runs heavy-haul equipment. For everything else in a renovation — cabinets, drywall, trim, old flooring, fixtures, packaging — normal junk removal pricing applies.

Household appliances are a different story and are not "heavy metal": your old refrigerator, washer, dryer, stove, grill, and bed frame all go, every day.

Junk removal vs. renting a dumpster: which is actually cheaper

The honest comparison depends on one question — do you want to touch the stuff?

Who loads itWe doYou do
Typical cost$99–$1,000 by volumefrom $300 flat
Time on your propertyAbout an hourDays, on your schedule
Best forClear it today, doneSorting a garage over a weekend

The rule of thumb: if the project is one afternoon, hire the crew. If it is spread over a weekend, rent the trailer. The trailer wins on price the moment you would otherwise need two separate truck visits. We cover this in more depth in dumpster rental vs. junk removal.

Do you tip junk removal crews?

Never required, and no honest company will imply otherwise. That said, if two people just carried a sleeper sofa down from a third floor in August, $10 to $20 per person is a normal gesture in this area. Water in the summer is appreciated at least as much.

Five ways to pay less

  1. Combine jobs. Two separate $99 minimum calls cost $198. One $225 small-load call takes both piles and more. If you know more is coming, wait a week.
  2. Move it to the garage or curb first. Anything that shortens the carry shortens the job. Ask whether it changes your quote — with us it often does.
  3. Donate what is genuinely usable. Many Northern Virginia charities pick up furniture in good condition for free. Just know what they will not take: upholstered pieces with stains, anything with particleboard damage, mattresses, and most exercise equipment. Those still need a hauler.
  4. Check your county's bulk pickup first. Some Northern Virginia jurisdictions collect a limited number of bulk items per household per year at no charge, on a schedule. It is slow and the rules are narrow, but for one non-urgent item it is free.
  5. Send photos and lock the price. It costs nothing and removes the only real risk in this transaction.

Common questions

What is the cheapest junk removal option in Northern Virginia?

For a single item, the $99 minimum is as low as a professional service goes here. Below that you are looking at your county's bulk pickup program, which is free but scheduled weeks out and limited in what it accepts.

How much does it cost to empty a whole house?

A full-house cleanout is typically a full truck or more — from $1,000, and often two loads for a family home of 30 years. Estate cleanouts in this region generally run $800 to $1,500 and up.

Do you charge by weight?

No. Residential junk removal is priced by the volume your load occupies in the truck. Weight only becomes the pricing unit for construction material, which is exactly why standard trucks don't take concrete and dirt.

Can I get a price without anyone coming to my house?

Yes. Send photos of the pile and we quote from them. That is the entire point — you should know the cost before you commit to anything.

How fast can you come out?

Same day is normal in our core service area when you call in the morning. Next day is standard everywhere else.
